Question

Is it possible to efile the state (NY) return separately from the federal return?

I'm ready to efile my federal return and would like to do it now. However, I still have work to do on my state (NY) return. Can I efile that later?

Yes, you can e-file the federal tax return now and e-file your state tax return later.

In the File section for the program on Step 3 you can change how the state return is filed.

Turbotax says that NY state requires that the return be efiled if tax software is used to prepare the return. That may not be true. I think I can efile the federal return without the state but can I use regular mail for a NY state return later? I see it works for Georgia but not sure about NY. Anyone know?

The example shows Georgia but that procedure is good for any state.

Once you are ready to file the New York state tax return you can change the back to e-file in the File section on Step 3.
