Question

Is it possible to mark a quarterly tax payment as zero due to not living in the state at that time?

I lived in a different state for all of Q1, employed. Moved to a different state during Q2, self-employed. My tax due is quite high and I feel as though the Q1 payment of zero is to blame.

Make sure you are allocating the time you lived in State 1 and that in State 2.

Your total tax liability for a tax year is not affected by your quarterly payments. It can make more or less due at the end of the year (and affect a penalty), but not the total you'll end up paying in tax for the year.

If you didn't make a Q1 tax payment, you didn't make one. And it sounds like you were not required to since you were not self-employed at that time.
