Is it too late to file 2021 taxes? I know there are penalities

Online preparation and e-filing for 2019 and 2020 and 2021 is permanently closed.

To file a return for a prior tax year

 If you need to prepare a return for 2019, 2020 or 2021 you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign,  and mail the return(s)

You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.

Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

Note:  The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac.  It cannot be used on a mobile device.

No, it is not to late to file a 2021 tax return.  If you started the 2021 tax return using the online editions you need to sign onto the online account the the exact same User ID you used to create the account.

You will need to download the 2021 tax data file and then open the data file with the TurboTax software for 2021 that is installed on your personal computer.

A 2021 tax return can only be printed and mailed using TurboTax, it cannot be e-filed.

It should be still there.  Were you done?  Have you paid for Online yet?  If you didn't finish in time you need to switch to the Desktop program. If you are getting a refund you have 3 years to file and there is no penalty.  

If you already started in the Online version you can move your return to the Desktop program even without paying for Online.  If you already paid for the Online version you can contact them to give you the program download.  You will need a full Windows or Mac computer to install it on.

After you get the program installed the first thing to do before you open your tax return is to update the program and install any state programs you had.  So you first might need to start a fake return to be able to download the state program (go to FILE - New)

Then you just OPEN the .tax2021 file, go up to File-Open.  You don't import or transfer it.
