Is switching from an hourly employee to a exempt employee going to be considered a new job if it is within the same company?

No, it does not indicate a new job.  Your employer issues you a W-2 to report your wages from all job titles and positions you held during the year.  Changing from hourly to exempt will not impact the filing of your tax return.
