IS the divorced status only if you were divorced during the tax year or does it mean you were divorced any time prior to end of tax year including many years ago?

I am trying to determine if I should check the box for single or divorced. I was divorced 10 years ago.

Doesn't matter. Divorced is not a filing status. You are Single. I think if you pick Divorced it will just ask you more questions like if you got divorced this year.

It would only be relevant if you were divorced during the current tax year. TurboTax uses that information to help determine what filing status you should use. The 'divorced' answer is not directly reported anywhere on your tax return.
