Is there a way to e-file my MA return MFS when my wife and I already e-filed MFJ for federal? She is going to file her HI return as MFS by mail.

I am military, and my HOR is MA. I am stationed in HI, and my wife's state of residence is HI and she works here.

We filed federal together, MFJ. For state, we created two additional returns on turbotax so we can MFS our respective states with the federal part just as a mock return

In a previously answered question, it states that a couple who does MFJ for federal but MFS for states may have one person e-file their state. However, when I attempt to do this for my MA state return MFS, It states I cannot proceed to efile since the federal was not efiled -but I had already e-filed MFJ for federal on a separate worksheet. Do I just need to mail both state returns in?

Correct.  Much depends on the state.  If the state requires a mock or a "What If?" federal return, the only way to get this to them is by mailing it in.  If Massachusetts requires a "What-if?" mock return (which I believe they do), then, yes, you will want to mail the state returns in.

Follow up question: Should the total federal income on my MA return be what I filed for my MFJ return? or should it be from the numbers from the mock return?
