IT-196, line 24 should be $601, not $14,420. How do I change the number?

That is a New York form for itemized deductions. The number is rather high for investment expenses.

Line 24 is: Other expenses – investment, safe deposit box, etc. These could have been entered in the federal section :

• Federal 
• Deductions & Credits
• Retirement & Investments
• Other Investment Expenses

New York also includes these items that will flow to that line from the federal entries:

Enter the total amount you paid to produce or collect taxable income and manage or protect property held for earning income.

Do not include any personal, living, or family expenses on line 24.

Examples of expenses to include on line 24 are:

• Certain legal and accounting fees.

• Clerical help and office rent.

• Custodial (for example, trust account) fees.

• Your share of the investment expenses of a regulated investment company.

• Certain losses on non-federally insured deposits in an insolvent or bankrupt financial institution. For more information, see our 2018 New York itemized deduction webpage.

• Casualty and theft losses of property used in performing services as an employee (see Casualty and theft worksheet, page 6).

• Deduction for repayment of amounts under a claim of right if $3,000 or less.

• Convenience fee charged by the card processor for paying your income tax (including estimated tax payments) by credit or debit card. The deduction is claimed for the year in which the fee was charged to your card.

  You must keep a list of the type and amount of each expense claimed on line 24 for your tax records.
