ITIN Approved. Possible To Correct 1040 and Efile?

Hello everyone,

I applied for ITIN for my spouse (submitted W7 and my 1040). The ITIN has been approved and I have the letter now. I am wondering if it is possible to efile and submit, because I need to edit something on the 1040, which was not on the earlier 1040 I submitted to IRS alongside the W7.

Right now, I can't track my refund on IRS website, as it says they do not have my information yet. I am wondering if I can e-file right away, and make the correction I need to do.

@lamal5074  from you post, I get the following:

    (a) You a US person  ( citizen/GreenCard / Resident for Tax purposes ).

    (b) Your spouse  ( if in the USA , with  a dependent visa  ) is having the Tax Home as You

    (c) You filed a joint ( MFJ ) return .

    (d) Alon g with the return you filed a W-7 for your  spouse and this has been approved.

At this point  , IRS will start processing your filed return  , the completion of the process would be shown on WMR.

You said you needed to correct something on the filed return .  I would strongly suggest waiting till your  currently ( in the process queue )  filing an amended return.

Also note that an amended return  is not required unless there  is a change in taxable income and/or  credits etc.

Is there more I can do for you ?

Ok, thank you. Currently, Where is my refund tracking has the error : "The information you entered doesn't match our records". I guess they have not started the process of my tax filing despite sending in the 1040 and form W7. Only the application of ITIN (W7) has been approved.

Do I need to wait till IRS start my tax filing before I can track it on Where is my return? Do you also have an idea of the duration this takes?

Yes, you will only be able to track your refund after the IRS has processed your return.  The order of things here is that the ITIN department will process the ITIN, and write it in for you on the tax return.  Then, they forward it to the unit that processes the returns.

On average, returns mailed in take 8-12 weeks.  After this time, your return will show on the refund tracker.

It is not possible to correct the return to e-file this year, because you've already filed.  Of course in future years you'll be able to e-file.
