I'm on a J1 visa since June 2017 (first as research scholar (2017-2019) and now as alien physician (2019-present). I filed my 2018 and 2019 taxes with turbotax (previously was not aware I cannot file on j1 using turbotax).  Do I need to amend both 2018 and 2019 return and send two Form 1040-NRs using sprintax? Also, for this year taxes, which one to use- turbotax or sprintax?

If you entered the US with a J-visa in 2017, you were exempt from counting days for two years, 2017 and 2018.  You were required to file a Form 1040NR for those two years.  If you have filed a Form 1040, you would need to amend your Form 1040 to Form 1040NR.

    Here are the steps:

You would need to submit both the Form 1040-X and Form 1040NR together:

    1. Download the Form 1040-X from the IRS website (see below).  On the front page of Form 1040-X, enter your name, current address, and social security number (SSN) or IRS individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN)
    2. Do not enter any other information on page 1.
    3. Do not complete Parts I or II on page 2 of Form 1040X.
    4. Enter in Part III the reason why you are filing Form 1040X.
    5. Complete a new or corrected Form 1040-NR.  As TurboTax does not support nonresident forms, click here Sprintax.
    6. Across the top of Form 1040-NR, write “Amended”
    7. Attach the new or corrected return (Form 1040NR) to the back of Form 1040-X.

You would start counting your days from January 1st, 2019.  If you were present within the US for more than 183 days in the year 2019, you are a US resident for tax purposes.  You do not need to amend.
