Question

lasik payments combined with other medical expenses

Hello,

I had lasik in 2016 and at the time it didn't qualify for a medical deduction (it wasn't >10% my adj gross income) so I didn't claim it on my 2016 taxes. I paid with a 2 yr payment plan that just finished in 2018. I also had surgery (and physical therapy) in 2018 that was expensive enough that I think I will now qualify for a medical deduction. Can I include the 2018 payments made towards the lasik procedure in the total medical expenses for 2018?

Thanks for any help!

Answered my own question! The lasik procedure was charged to my medical credit card in 2016 so it looks like even if I've been making payments this whole time, a deduction for the procedure is only valid for the year when the charge was made (2016) and not the year(s) when I paid the credit card bill (2017 and 2018).
