Question

Last year, by husband and I both received FICA refunds. How can I know if we will also receive refunds this year?

If you had too much SS withheld then it will be added to your refund.  Remember that you must enter each of your W-2's under your OWN names in the software, so that you do not artificially inflate your refund.  If you do that, you will get a letter from the IRS in a year or two, demanding that you pay back the refund with interest.

For 2019 the maximum amount PER PERSON for SS is $8239.80.  If either of you has more than that total amount for your W-2's in box 4, then you would be refunded.   Most commonly this would happen if you had more than one employer.

But be careful--if you file a joint return you must make sure you are not entering all of the income and W-2 data under only one of your names.
