Last year I received $8,000 child tax credit. This year I am only getting $6,500. Why is this?

Did a child turn 17 during 2024?   When they are older than 16, you lose the child tax credit and instead you get the $500 credit for other dependents.

If one of your dependents was age 17 in 2024 then they are no longer eligible for the Child Tax Credit.  They are only eligible for the Other Dependent credit of $500.

If that is not the case the you probably answered a question incorrectly for one of your dependents.  The program shows you when the child tax credit is being used for each child when you complete entry of the dependent.
