Question

Looking for the exact dollar amount to put into my 1099-R box 16

Box 16 on my 1099-R tax form  is blank. This box is the State Distribution Amt.

TurboTax is telling me that this box in TurboTax can't be blank or less than the state tax withheld. My state tax withheld for box 14 is $527.46.

What number should I be putting in box 16 in TurboTax, since my 1099-R form has a blank box?

I value anyone's help on this.

Yes, if you have an amount for State Tax Withheld in Box 14 of your 1099-R, you need to enter an amount that the tax relates to in Box 16.  This is usually the same amount as in Box 1 (or Box 2a, if you have an amount there).

You can enter the amount in TurboTax when filling out the entry form for the 1099-R, if it is blank on your form. Depending on your state, some or all of your pension income may be excluded from state tax.  TurboTax will figure that for you.

Great! Thank you Marilyn. The box 1 and 2a number is the total taxable amount, that is the correct one to use even though box 16 asks for the state distribution amount, correct?

Yes, Box 2a or Box 1 would be the State distribution.
