Married Couple living in different States (RA and NRA)

Hello,

In 2023 we lived in different states. I worked in Massachusate, my wife studied in New York and she is currently a RA.

We want to file MFJ for federal, but I am not sure how to do our state returns. Please advise how best file our state taxes. If we have to file state taxes seperately, should my wife consider NRA or RA? Any advice would be appreciated.

Best,

Typically, a couple filing a joint federal return files using the same status for state returns.  However, many states have special rules for couples with incomes from different states which also varies by the residency statuses.  You should repost here with more clarifying information on your situation.

For example, I read you worked in MA and your spouse studied in NY and that you lived in different states.  However, which state(s) did you each live in?  For how long?  Did your spouse earn any income and in which state(s)?   You mention "Resident alien vs non-resident alien, how is your spouse qualifying to file as resident alien?
