Married filing jointly, do I need to add my wife's income even if it was less than $500?

Yes you do.  Every W-2 that you received must be reported on your tax return, even if they are for small amounts.  Remember that each one of those W-2’s has your Social Security number on it, and that income was reported to the IRS by the employer.  You do not want to get in trouble with the IRS for under-reporting your income.

Hi,

My wife received exactly $500 from a company that she applied as a consultant. This amount was because she went through an interviewing process and ended up being selected, however she has never been requested to provide her services and got a W-2 of $500. My tax return was $3057 and once I added her $500 wage, my return went down to $1297.

Is that accurate?

Probably a typo.  Double-check your entry.  Look at all the boxes you entered from the W-2.    Were there any amounts in Box 10-14?   Make sure you did not enter 5K or 50K instead of $500.  @revangel
