MFJ incarcerated spouse

  • If I choose to file MFJ, and my spouse has been incarcerated for the entire year, and the only money is receives is the $4 state pay that all inmates receive, does that get added to the taxes as income? Or because he doesn't get a W2, would his income be 0?

    The state pay is added as income.

     

    In the 'Wages and Income' section of TurboTax scroll down until you find 'Less Common Income'.  The last line there is 'Miscellaneous Income'.  Click start next to that and then scroll to the bottom again and click 'Other Reportable Income'.  

     

    This allows you to enter a description and amount for the income received.
