I'm unable to file MN return electronically due to mortgage interest value on form M1SA. I have no mortgage interest or points to report. Showing blank on Federal Schedule A and zero on M1SA. The error message says "Home mortgage interest should not have a value since federal Schedule A, lines 8b and 8c are blank. I deleted the "0" but it kept coming back. Help please. I don't want to mail it in.

TurboTax transfers data from your federal return to your state return. Before you begin troubleshooting your state return, go back through your federal return and make sure everything is correct.  Check your entries for any mortgage interest statements (Form 1098) that you have entered.

After you review your federal return, select the State Taxes tab and review the state section. Pay close attention to the information, especially if you have made changes to your federal return. There might be new sections that need to be completed.

Hi Leticia,

Thanks for the reply. However, I have done that multiple times, spending 3 hours looking through the 1098 and. I also tried deleting and repopulating the state forms but none of the methods work.

If you have a Form 1098 showing in your return that may have been carried over from a prior year, you can delete it. You can also go back through your mortgage interest screens to make sure there wasn't an error.

To delete a Form 1098, you can do the following if you are using TurboTax Desktop:

  1. Click on "Forms" at the top right of your TurboTax screen to switch to "Forms Mode"
  2. In your left panel search for "Form 1098"
  3. Click on "Form 1098" and it will appear in your right panel
  4. At the bottom left of your "Form 1098" click on Delete Form
  5. A box will appear to confirm the deletion, Select "Yes"

If you are using TurboTax Online you can delete a Form 1098  as follows:

  1. Continue your return
  2. Choose "Tax Tools" option on the left menu bar in the federal section of TurboTax
  3. Choose "Tools"
  4. Under "Other Helpful Links" choose "Delete a form"
  5. Find the Form 1098 and click on the option to delete it

You can get back to your entry screens in TurboTax for Mortgage Interest to check that your entries are correct as follows:

  1.  Click on "Search" (magnifying glass) at the top right of your screen and
  2. Type "1098" in the search bar. ‌
  3. Click on "Jump to 1098."  This will allow you to review your entries for your mortgage interest from Form 1098 and delete your Form(s) 1098.
