Question

My 1099-Misc is for COLA, not self-employment income. Turbotax treats it as self-employment income. It needs to be reported on line 8 of schedule 1, how do I do this?

Per IRS, if I'm not an employee of the payer, and I'm not in a self-employed trade or business, you should report the 1099-Misc income on line 8 of Schedule 1 (Form 1040)

Use the following steps to enter your Form 1099-MISC:

  • On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)
  • This opens a box where you can type in “1099-MISC” (be sure to enter exactly as shown here) and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)
  • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to 1099-MISC"
  • Click on the blue “Jump to 1099-MISC” link

Then, enter the information from your Form 1099-MISC and answer the follow-up questions:

  • None of the uncommon situations apply
  • No, it did not involve work that's like your main job
  • You got it in 2020
  • No, it didn't involve an intent to earn money

The income will be reported on Schedule 1 line 8.
