12a/b is retirement income other than IRA's reported on a 1099-R. in the retirement interview.  12b is the taxable part  - if it is all taxable then 12a can be blank.

Line 12b can come from 1099R box 2a or how you answered the follow up questions after entering the 1099R.  If 12b is less than 12a it usually means you said you made after tax payroll deductions to your 401K.

I dont understand the last part of your answer.

"If 12b is less than 12a it usually means you said you made after tax payroll deductions to your 401K. "

My 12 b is smaller then 12a but my income is by way of Pensions an one 401k  I didnt pay tax on my payroll deduction?

What calculations do they use to come up with the $$ for 12b ?
