Question

My 2019 state refund was $804. Turbotax is showing $2,427 as the 2019 refund amount which is reducing my refund. Despite inputting $804. Why is this happening?

This happened as soon as I started the state tax form after completing federal. Prior to that the 2019 refund amount was correct. Definitely did not receive the larger amount in refund last year. I use TT every year so they have the correct info.

Form 1099-G reports certain types of government payments you received during the tax year. Examples include unemployment, paid family leave, or if you received a state or local tax refund for a prior tax year.

If you received a 1099-G make sure you have entered it in the right section. 1099-G can be reported in the Unemployment section or the Other Common Income section, it depends on the income that was reported on the form.

Review to State and Local Tax refunds section to make sure you didn't enter anything in there. If you used TurboTax last year and you are using the same account, your 2019 state refund will automatically carry over to this year's return.

To revisit the State and Local refunds:

  • Login to your account.
  • Select Federal from the left menu.
  • Go to Wages and Income then Income and Expenses.
  • Scroll down to Other Common Income and Edit/Review next to State and Local Tax Refunds form 1099-G.
