If you answered all of the questions accurately in the educational interview portion of TurboTax, then you shouldn't be seeing this.  In other words, you should not be presented with the American Opportunity Credit if you've already told the program that you've taken the tax benefit in four previous years.

That said, we would respectfully offer the following three suggestions to correct this issue.

First, try to go back through the educational interview, from the beginning, and double-check all of your entries.  When done in the correct sequence, the American Opportunity Credit should be unavailable.  Please see the several screen-capture images at the bottom of this answer for a graphical illustration of the procedure (simply click to enlarge the images).

Second, if the first suggestion fails, then you may be able to manually override the TurboTax program and the American Opportunity Credit by using the (hidden) "letme" function.  Please refer to the following webpage for more information:

Third, if the first two suggestions fail to correct the matter, then please feel free to call us during daytime hours.  A live TurboTax expert can walk you through all of the necessary data entries (including the ability to screen-share with your computer) to get around the problem.  Here is a link where you can create a support ticket and reach us:

Thank you for asking this question, and good luck with your academic studies.
