Did he have less than $4150 of income in 2018?

He may need to file taxes if he had any income at all.

he didn't have any income he was in the army for 9 years then was honorably discharged. he came home and has lived with me for a year and a half he has taken the year off to clear his head.

Then he does not need to file a return, assuming he had no income at all in 2018.

You can claim your son as a qualified relative. You will get the $500 credit for other dependents.

He does not have to file a return since he had no income.
