Question

My child is being denied qualifying dependent status, but she meets all of the requirements

My daughter is 19 and a full time student working toward a degree. She is a US citizen, no one else is claiming her as a dependent, and she is not married. She lived with us in the summer but was at school otherwise. She made $4600 in 2018, which was not half of her support (tuition alone was 9850).

So she meets all the criteria for a qualifying child. She does NOT meet the criteria for a qualifying relative...but my understanding is that is separate from a qualifying child.

So why is she being denied as I do my taxes in TurboTax?

from what you state the credit should be available in TT.

did you answer that she lived with you all 12 months of the year? Even though she was away at school that is considered 'temporary' and the IRS advice is to include that as 'lived with you'.  TT notes that 'education' is considered temporary below the question

The income doesn't matter for a student under 24 years old.

suggest reviewing this IRS link and work through the questions to confirm her status as a 'other dependent' - that is for the $500 tax credit.

TT asks you the exact same questions, so maybe it'll jog you on what you are answering incorrectly.

the $2000 child tax credit is for children under 17 years old.

she should be eligible for the $500 credit for a 'other dependent' ;   It's kinda confusing.  If you are under 24 and a full time student, you can qualify for the $500 'other dependent' credit and there is no income criteria. Once 24, that 'other dependent' credit is still $500 credit, but there is a $4150 or less income criteria (plus some other stuff)
