Question

My dependent child earned less than $1000 and paid some taxes. How do I handle this? With a separate filing?

Did the child get a W-2? With W-2 income of less than $1,000 he or she is not required to file a tax return. However, he or she might want to file a tax return to get a refund of the income tax that was withheld, even though not required to file. Only income tax can be refunded, not Social Security or Medicare tax. If the child does file, he or she must file his or her own tax return. You cannot include your child's W-2 income on your tax return.

If the child does file a tax return, make sure it indicates that he or she can be claimed as a dependent.

If the child's income is not all on a W-2, post more details about how the income was earned, the exact amount(s), and how "some taxes" were paid.
