You do not need an ID to file federal taxes online electronically, although it does ask at the end if you would like to enter in your ID information to better protect your identity.

You can leave the driver's license/state ID information blank and still efile your federal return. Just be sure that the fields for this information are empty.

However, Illinois and Alabama require a driver's license to file a state return. If you don't have an IL license, you will have to print your IL return and paper-file it. Alternatively, you can hold off on filing until you get an IL license.
