Question

My employer changed names and as a result I got a 2nd W2, one with their original name and another with the new parent company. Do I get less return now?

I worked for a company for half of the year, then another bought out my company and the payments changed to their name. As a result I have 2 W2s, one from the original company, and another from the company that bought us out with different incomes on them. I found out that when I input 2 W2s I get a huge reduction in my tax refund. I didn't work 2 jobs, it's the same thing under another name. Is there anything I can do?

You need to contact the HR office and go over with them the 3 W-2's.  Bottom line is the total from all the W-2;s should be what you earned for the year.

It certainly appears a corrected W-2 (which is a W-2C) should be issued.  You still may two to report (one for old company and one for new) but total wages cannot be more than you made.

This is the IRS link to the W2C you may want to share with your HR department.

If you don't get a corrected one follow the instuctions in this link below:

Thank you for the quick response, Michael. Do you know if this solution would work if the 2 W2s have different Employer names and IDs? In my situation they do.
