If you were supposed to receive form 1099-NEC, you're considered self-employed.

The payer is treating you as a self-employed worker, also referred to as an independent contractor.

  • You don't necessarily have to have a business for payments for your services.  You may simply perform services as a non-employee.
  • The payer has determined that an employer-employee relationship doesn't exist in your case.

If your self-employment income was only from cash, personal checks, credit card payments, or cryptocurrency, enter your income as follows:

  1. Open your return and type Schedule C in the Search box.
  2. Select the Jump to link. This will take you to where you can enter any cash, personal checks, credit card payments, or cryptocurrency (Form 1099-K) related to your self-employment.
  3. You may first be asked some general questions about your business.
  4. After you answer them, you’ll be taken to the Let's enter the income for your work screen. Select Other self-employed income and provide all necessary information.

If you're self-employed, you'll have to report the income Schedule C. You're able to deduct qualified business expenses.

Sadly, your employer is in violation of federal law by not issuing you a tax document.  But you are required, of course, to report the income, and can also report any qualifying expenses associated with this work.

You will need the Self Employed edition of TurboTax, as this income is considered self employment income.  Just so you know, you'll also owe self employment tax on any of this income that exceeds $400 (after expenses).  The TurboTax program will generate a Schedule SE for those taxes, and also a Schedule C for this income.  See the TurboTax FAQ I'm linking below for instructions on entering your self employment income.

How do I report income from self-employment?
