Solved

My ex &I separated in Oct 2016 & filed for divorce Nov 2016 in La. We are waiting for it to be finalized with the court. Can I file as single head of household for 2017?

"Single head of household" is not a thing.

"Single" means you are considered unmarried according to state law.  Sounds like no.

For "head of household" you must have lived apart from your spouse for at least all of the last 6 months of the tax year, and provide care in your home for at least one other qualifying person (usually your child), and pay more than half the household expenses of that home.
