Question

My ex-wife and I switch off with our kids on tax returns. I claimed them last year so the stimulus checks came to me. Will I be penalized this year if I don't claim them?

It is not likely you will be penalized for not claiming the children as dependents this year. This situation is common and normally you will not be asked to pay back stimulus money you received based on your tax return from the previous year.
