year were that I claimed my girlfriend as a dependant. she was unemployed for 10/12 of those months and lived with me the whole time.

Everything you said is why.  

More income = more tax and usually less refund.

Your withholding didn’t increase enough to keep up with the increase in income.  And the withholding tables were reduced so they didn’t take out as much federal withholding from your checks so you got more net pay each month.
