Question

My Federal Review shows Tax Liability of $4,213 and a Total Taxes Paid of $4,619. This should allow for a refund of about $400. But Turbo Tax shows Tax Due of $8,958.

Take a look at your actual Form 1040 to see what those numbers represent.  Most likely the Tax Liability number is only for income tax liability, not including other taxes such as self-employment tax or taxes reported in Part II of Schedule 2.

Use the following steps to preview your Form 1040 if you are using TurboTax Online:

  • In the navigation area on the left side of your screen, click Tax Tools to expand your choices
  • Click Tools, which will open the Tool Center
  • Click View Tax Summary under “Other Helpful Links…
  • Click  Preview My 1040 to see your actual tax form

If you are using a CD/downloaded version of TurboTax, you can view your Form 1040 by clicking Forms in the upper right corner of the screen.

Form 1040 lines 22, 23, and 24 all pertain to the total taxes owed before taking payments and withholdings into account.

if this is significantly different than 2022, also compare the 1040 and schedules 1 - 3 as applicable line by line.
