Surviving spouses who have a dependent child may be able to use the Qualifying Widow(er) status in the two tax years following the year of the spouse’s death. If must have at least one dependent child and have handled at least half of the household costs. The standard deduction and the tax tables are same as Married Filing Joint. For more information, see "Who is a Qualifying Widow(er)?" in IRS Publication 4491 If you don't have a dependent child that lived with you, you will have to file as single.
