Solved

My husband has a side gig as an entertainer/artist. Why is his income in "Farm Optional Method"? How can I get it where it belongs? We have no farm!

When you are signed into your return, click on Federal in the left menu.   You should be taken to a list of income on your return.   And you should see his Self-Employment Schedule C and below that, you should see a reference to the Farm income that needs to be deleted.    However, I don't think you have anything to delete.

Line 14 will have an amount but it won't be used if you do not elect to use an optional method.   And there should not be anything on Line 1a if you don't have a farm.   So, your Schedule SE sounds like it is correct.    If he has a Schedule C, the Schedule SE will have amounts in Boxes 2 - 14.

There are 2 numbers from Schedule SE that you can verify on Schedules 1 and 2.   On Schedule SE, the amount on Line 12, SE Tax Amount goes to Line 4 of Schedule 2 and one-half of that amount is on Line 13 of Schedule SE and will be transferred to Schedule 1, Line 14 as an adjustment to income.

Delete that form and enter the income under Schedule C.

Here's the general procedure for viewing the forms list and deleting unwanted forms, schedules, and worksheets in TurboTax Online:

  • Open or continue your return in TurboTax.
  • In the left menu, select Tax Tools and then Tools.
  • In the pop-up window Tool Center, choose Delete a form.
  • Select Delete next to the form/schedule/worksheet in the list and follow the instructions.

To set up your business:

  1. Open or continue your return.
  2. Search for schedule c and click the Jump to link in the search results.
  3. Answer Yes to Did you have any self-employment income or expenses?
    • If you've already entered self-employment work and need to enter more, select Add another line of work.
  4. Follow the onscreen instructions.

Thank you for your reply, @ColeenD3

Hmm. He already has a Schedule C and I don't want to delete Schedule SE. His small business as an artist/entertainer did have income and expenses. But Part II of Schedule SE looks inaccurate since he doesn't farm. It seems like line 14 should be blank. I'm not sure why there is any entry there, but it auto-filled. Is it possible to delete the number on line 14? Will that throw any other figures off (since many entries link to others)? Thank you!

(Schedule SE Part 1, Line 1a = no entry. And Part II line 14 auto-filled with an amount. Lines 15-17 are blank.)
