My husband owed taxes last year and hasn't paid in full. is the amount he owes automatically taken out of our filing this yr or is there somewhere to put what he owes?

If you still owe tax from a previous year your refund will be used to offset the back taxes.  You do not have to enter anything in to your tax return about it.  The iRS knows and will do it automatically.
