My husband passed away in 2016. Why can't I file qualifying widow?

I'm sorry for your loss. In the year of your spouse's death, you would file a joint return with him if that's what you normally would do. It would be his final return, and you would indicate in the Personal Info section that he passed away.

Next year, if you have dependent children, you would file as a Qualifying Widow. See this link under Qualifying Widow for more information.https://www.irs.gov/publications/p501/ar02.html#en_US_2013_publink1000220820
