Question

My mother lives with me. I answered questions regarding this. Now the question asks, did she live with a relative for more than half of 2020...Is it asking about me?

The question is asking if your mother lived with another relative, besides you, for more than 6 months in 2020. You will get that question if you indicated that your mother lived with you less than 6 months in 2020.  Ultimately, you must have provided over 1/2 of your mother's support.

Below is the criteria that must be met to claim your mother as a qualifying relative.

  1. The person can't be your qualifying child or the qualifying child of any other taxpayer.

  2. The person either (a) must be related to you in one of the ways listed under Relatives who don't have to live with you , or (b) must live with you all year as a member of your household (and your relationship must not violate local law).

  3. The person's gross income for the year must be less than $4,300.

  4. You must provide more than half of the person's total support for the year.
