Question

My nephew didn't add that he could be added as a dependent, now the filing is being rejected?

I assume that it’s your return that is being rejected. He should amend his return after it is processed and any tax liability is settled. You have to mail your return. It might or might not help to include a statement explaining your circumstance.  Unfortunately your return will be processed very late and amended returns can take more than 6 months to process.

    Once this error is made, you have to file a paper return if you want to claim  your nephew as a dependent.

    Also, he has to amend his return to eliminate the contradiction.
