Question

My new baby doesn't have her SS number yet. She's six months old. We've been waiting for her card to be ready since November. How can I file and list her as a dependent?

You can enter "Applied For" in the social security number (SSN) slot for now.  This will allow you to finalize your return for mailing and print the forms. If you believe you will have a refund, then there's no rush to send them in and you can wait for the card. Once you receive it, you can add it to your return and still e-file.

  • Note:  E-file will not be accepted without the SSN on the return.

If you will owe you can mail your return with the payment and send a copy of the card if requested.

If you would like to inquire about her card you can reach out to the Social Security Administration (SSA).  It's very unusual for it to take this long.

  • Call SSA at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.; or
  • Contacting your local Social Security office.
