Question

My parents live with us full time but one has short term disability. Can we still claim them as dependents?

We provide more than half of their living. They have no jobs and only live off short-term disability. We pay for everything else.

If they each individually meet the requirements as a Qualifying Relative Dependent, then you can claim them as a dependent. These requirements are different from the the requirements for "Qualifying Child Dependent".

As for the one on short term disability, that income may or may not count. It depends on what entity is paying the disability.

Typically (but not always) if the disability income is taxable then it counts as earned income subject to the income threshold of $4,300 as defined in the qualifying relative dependent rules.
