Question

My return got rejected with code 996. I retrieved my PIN entered it but still got rejected. Does my dependent need a PIN as well?

An IND-996 rejection error code means a dependent on your return is supposed to have an IP PIN, and either one was not entered for the dependent, or it was not correct.   See the FAQ article linked below:

 

FAQ:  E-file reject IND-996: The Dependent/Qualifying Person Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN) provided on the return is not valid
