Question

My return was rejected for DuplicateW2 because my husband and I both worked for the same company, for the same shift. How do I report this?

Does it need to be reported if the shift was only about $40 each?

Yes, the correct specific W-2s need to be reported.

You should be extremely careful to only report your W-2 on your return as your W-2 and your husband's W-2 on your joint return as your husband's W-2.

That should not happen, because each W-2 should be reported in the name and ssn of the recipient, either you or your husband, not the same person.

Check to be sure that you didn't input two copies of one taxpayer's W-2 instead of inputting one copy of each person's W-2 since generally you get more than one copy when you receive your W-2.

Be sure you only input only the Federal copy of each taxpayer's W-2.

The following boxes on the W-2 should be specific to the taxpayer:

Boxes a (employee ssn)

           d (control #)

e (Employee's first name and initial and last name and address and zip code

W-2s have too much identifying information on them to be duplicate W-2s if issued to two separate taxpayers, even if issued by the same employer, unless the employer made the mistake and entered the same name and ssn on both sets of W-2s.

You will need to check them over and verify them for accuracy to be sure that the ssn, taxpayer name, etc. designed on each form are different for the two of you.

If your employer reported your W-2 incorrectly, contact your employer for corrected W-2 copies:

Corrections.

If your name, SSN, or address is incorrect, correct Copies B, C, and 2 and ask your employer to correct your employment record.

Be sure to ask the employer to file Form W-2c, Corrected Wage and Tax Statement, with the Social Security Administration (SSA) to correct any name, SSN, or money amount error reported to the SSA on Form W-2.

Be sure to get your copies of Form W-2c from your employer for all corrections made so you may file them with your tax return.

If your name and SSN are correct but aren’t the same as shown on your social security card, you should ask for a new card that displays your correct name at any SSA office or by calling 800-772-1213.
