Question

My son attended college,1semester August-December, with full time credits. In December he had to withdraw for medical reasons. Is he still considered a full time student?

He was not in school January through May. He is 20, took a gap year out of high school and started his first semester in August. He attended classes through October, but had to stop going in November for medical reasons and he applied for and was granted an administrative withdrawal in late December.

No, in order to be considered a full-time student he would have had to be enrolled for an entire semester.

"A full-time student is a child who during some part of each of any 5 calendar months of the year was enrolled as a full-time student at a school, or took a full-time on-farm training course given by a school or a state, county, or local government agency. A school includes a technical, trade, or mechanical school. It doesn't include an on-the-job training course, correspondence school, or school offering courses only through the Internet."https://taxmap.irs.gov/taxmap/pub17/p17-155.htm#TXMP172a931f
