Question

My son is 17 and had a job. He filed his own return yet is still a dependent. My returns as his parent were rejected because it said he filed.

This is common.

This reject occurs when the dependent's SSN was on his own tax return and filed before the parents.  Since the IRS computer already has your son's SSN on a return in their system, they won't accept another return electronically with the same SSN on it.  You must print and file your return by mail.

Next year either e-file before your son or have him mail in his return. 🙂
