My son is 19 years old and I'm doing his taxes. Do I need to sign in under a different user and password for his return?

Yes, you need to create a separate online account (with its own user id and password) to prepare your son's tax return. If you use your account to prepare his return, you'll end up overwriting all of your information. If you are preparing returns for family or friends, it may be more economical to use the TurboTax CD/Download software (desktop) product, which lets you e-file up to 5 federal returns at no extra cost.
