You can apply for your newborn's Social Security number:

  1. At the hospital: When you give information for your baby’s birth certificate, you’ll be asked whether you want to apply for a Social Security number for your baby. If you say “yes,” you need to provide both parents’ Social Security numbers if you can. Even if you don’t know both parents’ Social Security numbers, you still can apply for a number for your child.

      2. At a Social Security office: If you wait to apply for your child’s number, you must:

               • Complete an application for a Social Security card; and

               • Show us original documents proving your child’s U.S. citizenship; Age; and                             Identity.

              • Show us documents proving your identity and your relationship to the child.

You generally must list on your individual income tax return the social security number (SSN) of any person for whom you claim an exemption or claim as a dependent.

You can claim a child, relative, friend, or fiancé (etc.) as a dependent on your 2020 taxes as long as they meet the following requirements:

  • They're related to you.
  • They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.
  • They're a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
  • They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.
  • They're under the age of 19 (or 24 for full-time students).
    • No age limit for permanently and totally disabled children.
  • They lived with you for more than half the year (exceptions apply).
  • They didn't provide more than half of their own support for the year.
