Question

My sons taxes were rejected because I had him as a dependent but he made too much money. I amended my return and took him off as a dependent. They keep getting rejected.

I've called and talked to a specialist several times. One told me that the return was correct and it will be a while until the IRS sees the amended tax return I filed before they can approve his return. What else can I do? or do I need to do anything else?

It can take three or more weeks for your amended return to be processed.  You can check on the progress on this IRS Page Where's My Amended Return?

Have him mail his return.  It can take months for the IRS to correct the duplicate use of a Social Security number, even if you amended.   Print, sign and mail the return.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
