My spouse has an H-4 visa and used Sprintax for tax filing without SSN or ITIN before. Now, TurboTax asks for SSN or ITIN. Is it necessary?

I'm currently a postdoc with an H1B visa, looking to file taxes. Previously, I used Sprintax without needing my spouse's SSN or ITIN. Now, TurboTax is asking for it. Is this necessary?

It is necessary in order to electronically file your return. If your spouse does not have an SSN or ITIN, you can file by mail by writing NRA in your spouse's Social Security field. I would suggest you obtain at least an ITIN for your spouse by filling out a form W7 and attach it to your return so that you can electronically file in the future.

Fill out Form W-7 and attach it to your return, as well as all necessary documentation. Click on the link to download a pdf copy to fill out and attach to your return.
Mail the return to the address specified in the Form W-7 instructions.
