My state return seems really high-how can I be sure it is correct?

I would print out your state return from 2015 and compare it (line by line) to your 2016 return to look for any numbers that are extremely different.

That may point out where the difference is. If not, please let me know. I would look for your state withholding amount (or the taxes you had withheld from your pay for the state) on your Form W-2 or any income you received. Or perhaps your income was lower and that qualified you for certain credits you did not receive last year.
