Question

My tax due shows $44 but my income is less than the standard deduction. Why is it showing a tax due?

You would have to look at your Form 1040 and Schedule 2 (Additional Taxes) to see exactly what the $44 is. One common possibility is that you have self-employment income (business income on Schedule 1 line 3, from Schedule C). If your self-employment income is more than $432 you have to pay self-employment tax, even if you don't have to pay any income tax. Self-employment tax would be on Schedule 2 line 4.
