This rejection relates to your filing status and indicates that another return has been filed listing you as the spouse of someone filing Married Filing Separately.  Your status must also be Married Filing Separately (MFS) if you wish to e-file unless you meet the qualifications to file Head of Household.

You cannot file single unless you were unmarried on December 31, 2020.  You also cannot file Married Filing Jointly - at least not electronically.

If you were indeed single on December 31st there may be an error in the IRS database.  If you are trying to file Married Filing Jointly either to correct a previously filed MFS return or because it is your correct status (indicating an error in the IRS database) then your return must be filed by mail.

I meet the qualifications to file Head of Household and originally got efile reject because of my dependents being claimed by my first ex husband. I just got an update and this reject code appeared however I mailed my return in Oct 20th as HOH with my dependents and proof ect. My question is if it’s common for one spouse without a decree to filed HOH if they qualify and the other does MFS still… my husband (we’ve been separated since April 2020) filed MFS.

If you have been separated from your spouse for at least the last half of 2020 --- and you are the one who has the children---then you could file as Head of Household.  If you are still legally married then your spouse has to file as married filing separately  since the spouse cannot file a joint return nor can he file as single.

If you qualify as Head of Household, when you enter your filing status (single or married filing separately) into MyInfo, and then enter your qualifying dependent, TurboTax will offer HOH as your filing status.
